Are Clear Aligners the Best Option for My Child?
Wondering what’s the best orthodontic option for kids playing sports? We know that practices, games, and even private training can be a priority for kids who are already seriously committed to a sport. Their passion for the sport can often lead to dental injuries, especially in contact sports. With that in mind, clear aligners or Invisalign can offer the safest and most convenient orthodontic solution. Aligners are soft plastic which means contact during sports will not cause any damage to the braces or to your child’s mouth. Imagine bumping heads or a soccer ball hitting their face. With clear aligners, we know this won’t turn into an orthodontic emergency. Clear aligner orthodontic treatment also means fewer appointments, which is much easier on your schedule.
Here’s some advice for parents with kids with braces: If your child is already in braces, the best option for contact sports is to use a sports mouth guard for braces. A very popular option that is available at sporting goods stores or Amazon is called the Shock Doctor. These mouthguards protect the teeth, the braces, and your child’s gums and cheeks from damage and discomfort.
Are Braces Safe for Sports?
Although non-contact sports are ideal for children with braces, in truth, there is no sport your child cannot play. On that note, here are some sports that offer a higher level of safety and peace of mind while also making life a little easier for mom and dad.
- Swimming: A low-impact sport with a very low risk of contact or collision, making it ideal for children with braces.
- Cycling: While there's some risk of falling, proper protective gear, like helmets, can help protect the face and mouth. Ensure that children cycle in safe, controlled environments.
- Athletics (Track and Field): Activities like running, jumping, and throwing events typically have low oral injury risks. Mouthguards are not usually necessary but can be used for added protection.
- Gymnastics: Although falls can occur, gymnastics doesn't involve direct contact or collision with other participants, reducing the risk of oral injuries.
- Tennis: A non-contact sport where the risk of a ball or racket impacting the mouth is relatively low compared to contact sports.
- Golf: Another non-contact sport with minimal risk to the teeth during play.
- Dance: Various forms of dance, including ballet, modern, jazz, and tap, offer physical activity with a low risk of oral injury.
- Volleyball: Although there's some risk from the ball or contact with other players, volleyball is generally considered safer for those with braces than contact sports.
How Parents Can Prep Their Kids’ Aligners and Braces on Game Day
Preparing for your child’s sports games while they have braces is very important. Remember, we want your child to have fun, be safe, and take care of their braces.
While Playing: Kids with Invisalign should make sure they wear their aligners during the game, which will act as a mouthguard. For kids with braces, don’t forget your braces-approved sports mouthguard!
Stay Hydrated: For kids with aligners, give them water only. This ensures they don’t have to remove the aligner to stay hydrated. For those wearing braces, allow them to have an electrolyte drink like Gatorade (just remember to brush when home again), but water is still a great option. In general, avoid high-sugar drinks like soda and juices.
Don’t Forget a Snack: You’ll want to provide a snack for your child with braces that are easy to chew and easy to swallow but something that gives a maximum energy boost to your superstar. Try foods like grapes, watermelon slices/cubes, string cheese, and even soft Nutrigrain bars. Avoid hard/chewy foods like breakfast/snack bars and crunchy veggies.
